ATP attended this years ASSW conference: The Arctic: New Frontier for Global Science that took place from March 27 to April 1 (http://www.assw2011.org/assw2011/sub_01.php).

ASSW is an annual meeting were most of the Arctic organisations place their meetings efficiently, back to back, at one place and during one week. Paul Wassmann gave an invited lecture entitled Rapid climate change and Arctic Ocean ecosystems: present setting and future expectations. Both talks were well received.

The next ASSW meeting will be held in Montreal (Canada) on 20-22 April 2012, in conjunction with the IPY 2012 Montreal Conference (22-27 April 2012; http://www.ipy2012montreal.ca/001_welcome_e.shtml).

The Arctic Science Summit Week 2013, including a Science Symposium, will be held in Krakow (Poland) on 14-20 April 2013.

Since its inception in 1997, the Gordon Research Conference series on Polar Marine Science has provided an international forum for presentation and discussion of frontier research on the polar oceans. The extraordinary and unique aspects of this series are the bipolar (Arctic and Antarctic) presentations and discussions across earth and life science disciplinary boundaries.  

The Conference will bring together a collection of investigators who are at the forefront of their field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with programmed discussion sessions as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented.

The ARCTOS network was strongly represented at the 5th ICES/PICES zooplankton symposium in Pucón, Chile  14-18 March 2011. In beautiful surroundings and an inspiring atmosphere the ARCTOS team presented their research to zooplankton enthusiasts from all corners of the world.

We wish you all welcome to the official opening of the IPY legacy after IPY EALAT: University of the Arctic Institute of Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry:  UArctic EALÁT Institute.

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco will officially open the new institute Thursday 24th at 1100 hrs, we hope you all will be present together with representatives from world reindeer herders and Arctic indigenous peoples societies. The focus at the opening is on use of traditional knowledge related to resource management in the Arctic and Subarctic regions.

The SAARP program has recently been completed and summaries of the results and products are available from the SAARP website. 

SAARP is the Statoil research program with the ARCTOS Network of Marine Ecologists. It supports Statoil's goal of environmentally responsible development in the Arctic, providing knowledge on ecosystem processes and ecotoxicology in the Pan-Arctic. The sub-themes investigated consist of climate-ecosystem science, ecotoxicology, ice-edge ecosystems and Arctic benthic ecosystems and food webs. A scientific understanding of the Arctic ecosystem is generated and applied to risk management and assessment.

An ARCTOS contingency by Marit Reigstad, Eva Leu and Paul Wassmann were invited to participate at the Arctic Biological Productivity Workshop in Fairbanks, Alaska, February 22 to 24.  About 30 specialist gathered at IARC to discuss how Arctic marine ecosystems will respond to a warming climate and decreasing sea ice.  The workshop further discussed the critical needs and new directions to improve our understanding and predictive capability of marine Arctic ecosystems. 

The video workshop was arranged during the Arctic Frontiers Young Scientist Forum. It brought together students from 10 different countries, mostly PhD students at the University of Tromsø. All of them specialize in High North topics from Arctic ecosystems to social sciences. The group went through an intensive creative process in three short days.
