ARCTOS - Arctic Marine Ecosystem Research Network
New ARCTOS PhD: Kriss Rokkan Iversen
The ARCTOS PhD school gladly announces that Kriss Rokkan Iversen with success defended her PhD thesis The microbial food web in a changing Arctic Ocean: Seasonal structure and function, regulatory mechanisms and carbon dynamics in Svalbard waters at the Faculty of Bioscience, fisheries and economy on April 14 2011. The title of the trial lecture was The microbial food web during the polar winter.
The supervisors were
- Professor Paul Wassmann, AMB
- Professor Marit Reigstad, AMB
- Professor Tron Frede Thingstad, University of Bergen
- Forsker Aud Larsen, University of Bergen
The opponents were
- Professor Carlos Pedro Alio, Dept Biologia Marina i Oceanografia, Institut de Ciències del Mar, Spain (1. opponent)
- Førsteamananuensis Tove Gabrielsen, UNIS (2. opponent)
We congratulate and wish Kriss all the best for her future work with the ARCTOS-associated company SALT in Svolvær, Lofoten Islands.

ATP present at Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW), Seoul, South Korea
ASSW is an annual meeting were most of the Arctic organisations place their meetings efficiently, back to back, at one place and during one week. Paul Wassmann gave an invited lecture entitled Rapid climate change and Arctic Ocean ecosystems: present setting and future expectations. Both talks were well received. The next ASSW meeting will be held in Montreal (Canada) on 20-22 April 2012, in conjunction with the IPY 2012 Montreal Conference (22-27 April 2012; http://www.ipy2012montreal.ca/001_welcome_e.shtml). The Arctic Science Summit Week 2013, including a Science Symposium, will be held in Krakow (Poland) on 14-20 April 2013. ARCTOS scientists involved in the Gordon Research Conference series on Polar Marine Science
The Conference will bring together a collection of investigators who are at the forefront of their field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with programmed discussion sessions as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented. 5th ICES/PICES zooplankton symposium in Pucón, ChileUArctic EALÁT Institute Opening Seminar: ARCTOS Students are encouraged to apply.Welcome the official open of UArctic EALAT Institute in Guvodageaidnu- Kautokeino, Norway Thursday 24th of March 2011. We wish you all welcome to the official opening of the IPY legacy after IPY EALAT: University of the Arctic Institute of Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry: UArctic EALÁT Institute. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco will officially open the new institute Thursday 24th at 1100 hrs, we hope you all will be present together with representatives from world reindeer herders and Arctic indigenous peoples societies. The focus at the opening is on use of traditional knowledge related to resource management in the Arctic and Subarctic regions. SAARP is the Statoil research program with the ARCTOS Network of Marine Ecologists. It supports Statoil's goal of environmentally responsible development in the Arctic, providing knowledge on ecosystem processes and ecotoxicology in the Pan-Arctic. The sub-themes investigated consist of climate-ecosystem science, ecotoxicology, ice-edge ecosystems and Arctic benthic ecosystems and food webs. A scientific understanding of the Arctic ecosystem is generated and applied to risk management and assessment. ARCTOS present during international Arctic Biological Productivity WorkshopFrom Hollywood til TromsøThe video workshop was arranged during the Arctic Frontiers Young Scientist Forum. It brought together students from 10 different countries, mostly PhD students at the University of Tromsø. All of them specialize in High North topics from Arctic ecosystems to social sciences. The group went through an intensive creative process in three short days. ATP: A quiet week in Tromsø……
The ATP associated artist Manuel Elviro Vidal from the University of the Baleares produced a video from the Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromsø in 2011 as well as from the second annual ATP meeting on “Midnatsol”, one of the coastal steamer Hurtigruten, between Tromsø and Trondheim. This is a short story of a week of learning and working, seen from a participant’s perspective. Vidal writes that “the road is made by walking ...”. And while we walked we could see politicians, managers and scientists in action and pass through mental and physical landscapes that are reflected in the video. The process inside the participants during this week were clearly quiet, while the action in the outside world was significant. The unbearable lightness of quietness…..
